A final decision on shutting down COVID-19 isolation facilities is likely to be taken in the year-end, stated the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The coronavirus cases in Mumbai has dropped significantly. The city has already achieved its set target of administrating its first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Mumbai in all the hospital beds has a capacity of accommodating 17,434 coronavirus patient as per the BMC dashboard. Recently, it was reported that more than 90% of COVID-19 beds are vacant.
For the coronavirus patients, a three-tier bed system was set up by the civic administration when the pandemic broke out. Itcomprised COVID-19 Care Centre -1 (CCC -1), CCC -2 and Dedicated COVID-19 Health Centres (DCHC).
They have now directed the hospitals to have only one ward as cases are declining in the city. Several COVID-19 wards will now be transferred to non-COVID-19 wards in BMC and government hospitals, said Suresh Kakani, Additional municipal commissioner and in charge of public health, while talking to Hindustan Times.
Meanwhile, Jumbo Centres, too, have seen a reduction in the the number of active beds.
He further added that even though they have reduced the beds they are not fully eliminating these facilities right now and a call will likely be take at the end of December or early January after examining the situation as the month of December is crucial for them since Christmas and New Years will take place.
