Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, in the city of Mumbai, have been on a rise for the last few weeks, and as per the report released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the prevalence has significantly risen in the suburbs of Mumbai.

A recently conducted review of COVID-19 cases and patient numbers over the past week showed a 25 per cent increase in active cases found in five wards of the western suburbs. As per a report released in 2020, these wards, for a few months were marked as COVID-19 hotspots, and as per the review, areas like Borivali, Andheri, Kandivali, Malad and Jogeshwari have once again seen a rise in cases.

According to the municipal health department, active patients in Mumbai currently stand at 32 per cent, whereby a total of 9,690 patients are undergoing treatment for COVID-19 in Mumbai. Out of these, around 3,126 are patients from these five areas.

The number of patients in these divisions was 2,387 on February 22, 2021, a few days before the infection spread rapidly.

Observing the same, the BMC Additional Commissioner, Suresh Kakani, said that a study is conducted to understand and map the increase in the number of patients across the wards. However, it would take some time to draw a conclusion, and it would be unfair to conclude that these wards alone have contributed to the increase in the number of patients.

Furthermore, public activities and events in these wards are being reviewed and the halls reserved for such purposes are also being inspected. In addition, the management of the residential colonies have been instructed to issue notices to the outsiders and enforce the coronavirus regulations strictly.
