Mumbai: More Children Are Contracting COVID-19 Since May

Mumbai is currently experiencing a growth in COVID-19 cases among children. The city recorded 274 cases amongst individuals under the age of 19 between August 21 and 28. The data shows that 65 of these were children under the age of nine. This amounts to nearly 10.78 per cent of the total cases registered in the city.

Additionally, 18 from the Mankhurd children’s home and 15 from a Byculla orphanage have tested positive for the coronavirus recently. The growth in positive infections among children can be attributed to the fact that India hasn’t fully approved COVID-19 vaccines for children, although this will change soon.

Since May this year, adult infections are at a decline while more cases are emerging among children. It’s worth pointing out that a majority of the kids that contract the infection end up being asymptomatic or experience mild symptoms. A total of 13 children have died as a result of COVID-19 since March, amounting to less than 1 per cent of the total deaths.

“The third sero-survey conducted in June revealed that over 51 per cent of children have Covid antibodies, which indicates that a significant proportion of children were exposed to the virus during the second wave. Another reason is children are going outside after the reopening and not able to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour,” BMC Additional Municipal Commissioner, Suresh Kakani said.
