A day after the 4-day curfew was imposed in Amravati, on Sunday, November 14, the district administration expanded it to include four more towns in the district after local BJP leaders staged a protest during a bandh.

The police officials stated that the curfew is now expanded to cover Morshi, Warud, Achalpur and Anjangaon Surji towns of the Amravati district.

Moreover, the internet services have been shut down for three days so as to prevent the spread of rumours which can fuel violence during a shutdown to protest incidents in Tripura late last month, officials said.

Meanwhile, a total of 60 people were arrested by the police in connection with back to back incidents of stone-pelting that took place in Amravati city on Friday, November 12, and Saturday, November 13.

In all, the police have registered 26 FIRs, 15 of them for Saturday’s violence and 11 for Friday’s incidents, at various police stations across the city.

Nearly, two shops and three two-wheelers parked outside one of these shops were burnt. One other shop was damaged, and the shop owner’s vehicle also burnt. Two shrines were also damaged.

Police have detained former Maharashtra agriculture minister Anil Bonde, MLC Pravin Pote and Amravati rural BJP president Nivedita Chaudhari for taking out a rally in protest against Friday's stone-pelting. A total of eight BJP activists were detained in Warud and Shendurjanaghat villages for raising slogans.

The prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC were imposed after at least 10 people were injured when police resorted to lathi-charge during a shutdown called by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday.

However, according to reports, the situation is under control now in Amravati as eight battalions of the SRPF and extra police force from Jalna, Nagpur, Wardha and Buldhana districts remains deployed.

Besides, on Sunday evening, November 14, a march was taken out by the police in sensitive areas of Amravati city.

Therefore, a meeting will be held this afternoon, November 15, to take a decision on restoring of internet services in the city.

The shutdown or bandh was called by the BJP. Though, Amravati district guardian minister Yashomati Thakur said some anti-social elements are trying to vitiate the atmosphere by throwing stones at shops. The state government will take necessary action. However, some people are using this for political gains, she added appealing people to not believe rumours.
