Western Railway (WR) has added 2,600 CCTV cameras along the Churchgate-Virar route that spans 60 km. These won’t be standard CCTVs though, as they will feature the ability to scan faces while also offering thermal capabilities to identify regions with large gatherings.
A WR official said that the agency is planning an upgrade of the surveillance and video analytics network across the entirety of the suburban section. The advanced CCTV surveillance system with high-end video analytics will be installed at railway platforms, foot overbridges, concourse areas, station entry/exit points, and inside the trains by June.

Divisional Railway Manager (Mumbai) at Western Railway, GVL Satya Kumar said, “This state-of-the-art system will be fully available by June. We have set up a unified command control at a cost of Rs 5 crore at Mumbai Central. From here, all the CCTVs will be monitored.”
Officials say that these advanced camera systems with video analytics will also help get an accurate headcount of people travelling within a particular train or coach and people waiting on foot overbridges.
These cameras will be capable of monitoring the cleanliness of railway stations. Based on data fed into the system, the colour coded indicators on the camera can show if the environment is clean or not.
The sensors outside the entry/exit points of trains will help track people getting in and out of the coaches as well as those in the vicinity of the train on the platform. In case there’s a large crowd, the sensors can alert the authorities to disperse them.
