The state government has recently announced that people in Maharashtra, who wish to learn driving, will not have to go to the transport office anymore to get a learner's license. Officials from the Department of Transport have now made the process simpler and have taken an ambitious decision whereby one can register for a learner's license online.
This will be applicable for both two-wheeler and four-wheeler vehicles, where one can apply for the same through distributors.
Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, on Wednesday, June 15, 2021, inaugurated both the online learner's driver license and online new vehicle registration systems which are linked to Aadhar numbers under the updated Sarathi 4.0 program.
As per reports, more than 15 lakh learner's licenses are issued and more than 20 lakh new vehicles are registered in the state every year. This work costs the citizens a good amount of money and time. But by making these services available online will lead to a reduction in burden and hassle. Moreover, it will also help in improving the work process of the department as the workload is expected to reduce for about 200 officers.
Officials have shared that such efforts should be made to provide better services in Maharashtra through new technology. Chief Minister suggested that the department should give priority to safe transport services while providing the same in a fast and transparent manner.
This is said to be a revolutionary step for the department. Sharing more information, Transport Minister Anil Parab said that they are also very important to keep the department afloat during the pandemic and other situations faced by the state. So far, more than 85 services of public interest have been made available online through the department. One will not have to wait any longer in queues or go to the offices to get a learner's driving license.

Moreover, vehicles were earlier being inspected by a team of officials for new registrations. Now, this step has now been removed and new vehicles will now be registered immediately at the distributor level. All documents will be generated by the vehicle distributor using DSC (Digital Signature Certificate) in an e-signature form. Therefore, there is no need to submit vehicle or other documents at the office. The vehicle number will also be issued as soon as the distributors pay the taxes and required fees, said Ashish Kumar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary of the department.
