The coronavirus crisis has put a halt to the grand celebrations for any festival. Ganeshotsav, which is celebrated each year and attracts a huge crowd on Mumbai’s public mandals, is also being celebrated in a simple manner.

Earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had appealed the people to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi in a symbolic manner. He had urged the Ganesh mandals to keep the festival simple. It was also decided the size of Ganesh idols will be up to four feet.

In the absence of these aesthetics of the festival, the cloth market during Ganeshotsav has gone cold. The market is usually rushed with people and there’s a huge demand for cloth curtains, decorative items for homes and public mandals. However, all these items remain in the warehouse due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This year, the shopkeepers have suffered huge financial losses as customers have turned their backs on the clothing market in Mumbai. Due to lack of demand, last year’s goods have also not been sold and the pressure on the shopkeepers have also increased.

The transitional clothing including kurtas are usually made in Dharavi and due to the absence of artisans and missing demand, the market is dry.

Meanwhile, due to the high demand, the price of marigold flowers have gone up. Last year, these flowers were sold at ₹120 per kg. However, this year, the rate has gone up to ₹300 per kg.

This has happened partially because of the coronavirus outbreak and lockdown as the arrival of marigold flowers in Mumbai’s markers has decreased by 70 per cent.
