According to reports, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will hold a meeting with Dahi Handi Coordination Committee via video conferencing in Mumbai on Monday, August 23, at 12:30 pm.

In the meeting, the decision will be taken whether to allow the celebrations during the upcoming Janmashtami festival amid the coronavirus pandemic.

This development comes after several Dahi Handi mandals requested the state government to allow them to hold the celebrations saying they will keep it small scale.

The Chief Minister is expected to appeal to mandals to cooperate with the authorities by following restrictions.

Earlier, the Dahi Handi Coordination Committee held a meeting with state minister Aaditya Thackery, the members had said that they will form small pyramids with limited people involved and only allowing fully vaccinated people to participate in the festivities.

Last year, many mandals cancelled the celebrations amid the coronavirus pandemic and government restrictions.

Despite COVID-19 cases witness a downward trend, the state government and civic officials have urged the citizens to follow the protocols and restrain from gathering in public places.

Janamashtami, the festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna on Earth is often observed with numerous rituals of which 'Dahi-Handi' is one of the most prominent.
