In view of rising coronavirus cases in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) chief Iqbal Singh Chahal on Monday, August 30, directed the authorities to strictly enforce the existing restrictive rules to seal the buildings.

This development comes amid fear of the possible third wave, which is expected to hit the state by October.

The BMC Commissioner said that if more than five patients are found, the building will be sealed completely.

As per this, no one is allowed to enter the buildings which are sealed. Also, anyone inside the building is also barred from leaving. Workers and drivers coming for various works in such buildings will also be barred during the period.

The commissioner directed the police to maintain security at the entrances of all the sealed buildings so that the preventive measures could be implemented more effectively.

Meanwhile, Chahal has ordered the officials to intensify the punitive action against those without masks and increase the number of tests.

The Municipal Commissioner was directed to implement this rule more effectively and strictly. This may cause some inconvenience to the citizens in the respective buildings. However, precautionary measures must be taken very strictly considering the possibility of a third wave and to prevent the spread of COVID-19 to others.

Against the backdrop of the possibility of a third wave, Municipal Commissioner Chahal held a review meeting of municipal officials on Monday.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, P. Velarasu, Dr Sanjeev Kumar, Suresh Kakani along with municipal officers, specialist doctors, superintendents of municipal hospitals and officers of Mumbai Police Force were present.

In the meeting, he also directed to temporarily appoint 'clean-up marshals' as required. The commissioner also directed the Mumbai police to take strict action against those who walk without masks and were found violating other COVID-related protocols.

Chahal also instructed all BMC Hospitals and Jumbo Covid hospitals to be vigilant and to be well equipped in view of the possibility of a third wave of COVID-19 and the possible outbreak of Delta plus strain of COVID-19 virus. Moreover, all necessary facilities in all the hospitals, such as ambulances, health care staff, necessary equipment, medical stock of medicines, pills, injections, etc. were reviewed and updated as per the need.

The control rooms functioning in all the 24 departments of BMC should be updated with the manpower, technical services and other facilities. He further instructed to disinfect public toilets and toilets in all municipal hospitals five times a day.
