In the year 2020, Maharashtra saw an increase in students suicide cases. The state has a record of having the highest suicides among students.

During the COVID-19 year, 1,648 students died by suicide in the state, reveals the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report. Apart from Maharashtra, the high student suicide cases were registered in  Odisha recorded (1,469 cases), Madhya Pradesh (1,158 cases) and Tamil Nadu (930 cases).

The 2020 tally of students suicide was higher by 11% (1,648) compared to previous years. In 2019, Maharashtra recorded 1,487 cases and 1,448 in 2018. The nationwide tally of students suicide stands at 12,526, which is 21% more than 2019 (10,335) toll.

Kersi Chavda, a Psychiatrist, said that the biggest cause of suicide among any age group is depression. Students find it difficult to cope with it, and the pandemic further worsened the situation.

The state had topped in the “failure in exams” category in 2020, reveals NCRB data. However, the country also saw a 25% drop in suicide due to exam failure. In Maharashtra, 287 people died by suicide due to failure in exams, while in 2019, 439 students died for the same reason. 

Meanwhile, according to a survey, in 2020,  during the COVID-19 pandemic, death by suicide increased by 25% in Maharashtra among small business owners. As per Mumbai Police statistics the suicide rate in Mumbai among children and teenagers between 2019 and 2020 has reduced.
