On Wednesday, November 10, an education department circular was issued highlighting that schools in the island city not partaking in the India-wide survey of pupils’ learning achievements can prolong their Diwali break till November 22, stated accounts.

But, the 292 schools in the island city that have been shortlisted for the National Achievement Survey (NAS) 2021 will commence operations Thursday onwards. The state had stopped the vacation and told schools to reopen on Thursday which is a day before the survey was set to be conducted.

Throughout Maharashtra, questions arose about the reopening of the educational establishments. Prior, in a circular dated Nov 3, that state had allowed schools to accommodate the remaining Diwali break with the Christmas or summer break.

According to reports, schools were told to see to it that there is 100 per cent attendance for the survey, thus, it is believed that parents were pressurized to send their children to school. In Maharashtra, however, schools reopened for grades 5 to 12 in the hinterland and 8 to 12 in the urban areas with parental permission.

However, for the survey parents have been compulsorily asked to be present in school on Thursday and Friday. Students are also allowed to travel by the local train for the survey with the provision that the individual coming along with the student needn’t be completely inoculated.

The schools selected have to get 30 students per grade for the study. From which, of the two classes of 30 each will be selected randomly with the help of chits. The survey is a written test of languages, sciences and maths. On Wednesday, state school education minister Varsha Gaikwad urged schools as well as parents to indulge in the survey to ensure that the state attains a formidable ranking.
