The prevalence of stroke is on the rise in India, with as many as 18 lakh stroke cases being reported every year according to the Indian Stroke Association (ISA). In both men and women, the risk of stroke increases with age, with approximately 50 per cent of all strokes occurring in people between the 46 -65 age group and 30 per cent over age 65.

Stroke is one of the most common causes of disability and poor quality of life. Patients who are elderly have a higher chance of death, lower functional results, and longer hospital stays. Losing as little as 10 pounds can have a real impact on stroke risk.

Exercise contributes to losing weight and lowering blood pressure, but it also stands on its own as an independent stroke risk reducer. Having high blood sugar damages blood vessels over time, making clots more likely to form inside them.

Smoking accelerates clot formation within the body and increases the amount of plaque build-up in the arteries. Smoking cessation is one of the most powerful lifestyle changes that will help you reduce your stroke risk significantly

Global Hospital, ParelMumbai, was recently honoured with World Stroke Organization Platinum Award 2022 for providing excellent and committed stroke care. This award was given on the basis of achieving 90 per cent of stroke cases, a neuroimaging time within 20 min of arrival at the hospital, treatment time of 60 min and stroke scale monitoring after entering a large number of stroke patients in the world stroke organization registry. All these patients were treated at the global hospital as per World Stroke Organization guidelines.

Dr Shirish Hastak, Regional Director Neurology, Stroke and Critical Care, Global Hospital, Parel, Mumbai said, “A stroke in the brain occurs when the supply of blood is interrupted due to blood vessel rupture or block. If the blood vessel is blocked, it is called an ischemic stroke and if it is ruptured, it is called a hemorrhagic stroke. In an ischemic stroke, the core of the irreversibly damaged area is frequently surrounded by a non-functional but not irreversibly damaged area, called the penumbra. To save the penumbra and reduce the patients’ disability, we have to open this artery with IV clot bursting medicine (within 4.5 hrs) or put a device to remove the clot (within 24 hrs). Hence the treatment is extremely time-sensitive.”

"We have witnessed an upsurge in the occurrence of stroke in the younger population below 50 years of age in the COVID-19 pandemic than in the pre-pandemic era, Stroke is the main cause of substantial long-term disability, accounting for 65 per cent of disability among stroke survivors. Since time is of the essence in every stroke case, we have implemented a Zero Deposit policy on Admission for acute stroke patients," stated Dr. Vivek Talaulikar, CEO Global Hospital, Parel, Mumbai.
