In a bid to scale up COVID-19 testing in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is to kick-start free tests for the coronavirus at 244 locations, including the civic body-run clinics and hospitals, from Monday, November 2.

As per reports, the free testing will be conducted in the COVID-19 centres and will be operational between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. every day on a ‘walk-in’ basis. Moreover, the centres are touted to undertake RT-PCR tests at some places while at most of the places antigen tests will be conducted.

The BMC had earlier informed of its plans to have at least four walk-in COVID-19 testing facilities in each of the 24 administrative wards in Mumbai. Moreover, the ward officials were directed to identify spots where these testing facilities are likely to come up. According to sources, as the authorities anticipate a surge in the cases of coronavirus in the upcoming months due to festivities and increasing gatherings, the civic body has been trying to scale up testing to combat the issue at large.

On the other hand, the State government has already brought down the rates of the COVID-19 tests that are to be conducted at private laboratories. A test at a private lab now costs ₹1,400 whereas a sample taken from a home is being charged at ₹1,800.
