The India Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain warning in parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat in view of the rapid intensification of Cyclone Tauktae.

In recent developments, a cyclonic circulation is currently located over the southeast Arabian Sea, and under its influence, a low-pressure area is very likely to form over the same region during the next 24 hours.

Known as cyclone Tauktae, a name given by Myanmar which means a highly vocal lizard, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a heavy rain warning in parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat in view of the rapid intensification of the cyclone.

Here are some of the things you should know about cyclone Tauktae:

  • The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has earmarked 53 teams to tackle possible after-effects of cyclone 'Tauktae' that is developing in the Arabian Sea.
  • According to the IMD, South Konkan and Goa regions were likely to experience moderate downpour at many places on May 15. However, its intensity is likely to increase further and it would receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places on May 16 and May 17.
  • Meanwhile, the IMD alerted Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts further predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall on May 16 and May 17, while Mumbai, Thane and Raigad would receive very heavy rainfall on May 17.
  • Maharashtra areas like Kolhapur and Satara are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places in ghat areas on May 16 and May 17. On the other hand, a similar warning is issued for Pune on May 17 only.
  • During times like these, people have been asked to maintain caution and not venture out in the open. Fishermen have been asked to remain at home as well.
