In a shocking incident, a 11-year-old girl fell to her death from her 10th floor apartment in a Borivali high rise while doing art work.

The incident took place on Saturday, November 13, around 4:40 pm.

According to officials, the school going girl identified as Hetvi Mehta could have unintentionally cut up a portion of a balcony net while engaged in a craft activity. There is no conclusion on how she could have fallen as the balcony does not have cameras. The balcony did not have a grill.

The police recorded an accidental death case and are making inquiries.

Hetvi lived with her grandparents and mother in the high rise, AHCL Homes, on Borivali Link Road. The passers-by heard a loud thud on the pavement outside the building. There was a cloud of dust and it was initially unclear what had happened. They then spotted the body of a child and alerted the society management. She had hit a signpost before landing on the ground, said an eyewitness who works in an office on the premises.

Someone called up the police control room. A police team rushed the girl to a public hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Another team stayed back to inquire about her identity.

As she was found on the pavement and the guards of the adjacent building did not recognise her, the police went door-to-door to inquire whose child it was.

When they reached Hetvi’s house on the 10th floor of the high rise, her grandmother was not aware of the accident. She said Hetvi was indoors playing. After they showed her a photograph of the deceased, she was in shock and confirmed that the photo was of her granddaughter. Hetvi’s mother was away when the incident occurred. The family is grieving and their statements will be recorded subsequently.

According to a preliminary report, there did not appear to be any foul play and it was an accidental death.

Hetvi studied in class VI of a suburban school and was an only child. The police will be going through CCTV footage from the society premises and commercial establishments.
