As many as five civic wards are re-emerging as COVID-19 hotspot. These new hotspots are in the Borivli-Vile Parle belt of western suburbs and comprising 32 per cent of the city’s total active cases.

According to the data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) as of February 24, the total active cases in Mumbai were 8,320.

Among the 24 administrative wards, R-Central, which covers Borivli, Gorai and Magathane areas, topped the list with 601 active cases, followed by K-West, which covers Andheri West, Vile Parle West and Juhu, with 563 cases.

The other three wards on the top five list were R-South (Kandivli, Charkop, Poisar) with 511 cases, P-North (Malad east and west) reported 507 and K-East (Andheri, Vile Parle, Jogeshwari E) stands at 502 cases.

In contrast, wards in the south Mumbai areas, namely B (Dongri), C (Kalbadevi, Bhuleshwar and Marine Lines) and A (Churchgate, Colaba, Cuffe Parade and Nariman Point), have the least number of active coronavirus cases. The B ward has 60 active cases, C ward has 109 and A ward 201.

However, in the first week of February, the sharpest spike of 91 per cent in COVID-19 cases was reported from A Ward, which covers parts of Colaba, Cuffe Parade and Churchgate. The other wards that have reported more than a 50 per cent rise in cases are R-North (Dahisar and Borivli) at 62 per cent, E (Byculla and Mumbai Central) 58 per cent, F-South (Parel and Sewri) 52 per cent and M-East (Govandi) 51 per cent.

Civic officials and local corporators attribute the spike in cases to increased testing, more people stepping out for work and leisure, along with the resumption of local train services for general public. Also, most of these cases are from non-slum areas, they pointed out.
