The Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has decided to allow all shops to operate seven days a week from Monday. All shops in the twin-city of Mira-Bhayandar will remain open on all days from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM under the ‘Mission Begin Again’ initiated by the Maharashtra government.

The shopping malls, markets, swimming pools and gyms will remain close till further orders, the civic body said. This comes days after the recovery rate in the Mira-Bhayandar region saw improvement. The region has been under strict lockdown since the coronavirus outbreak started in Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) also decided to allow shops to operate from August 15 for seven days a week. Earlier, the shops were allowed to function on the basis P1-P2 basis wherein shops on one side of the lane will remain open on odd days and those on the other side will remain open only on even days.

Now, both the TMC and MBMC have discontinued the odd-even rule. This happened after representatives from various trade associations expressing that they are facing financial troubles.

Due to the odd-even system, the shop owners were only able to do their business for 15 days which resulted in financial troubles for them. Amid the festival season, the trade unions had demanded that all shops be allowed to open for all seven days in a week to avoid congestion.

Maharashtra has been one of the worst-hit states in India due to the coronavirus outbreak. The number of coronavirus cases in the state has reached 5,95,865 and the death toll remains at 20,037. In Mira-Bhayandar alone, the number of COVID-19 cases has reached 10,833 and the death toll remains at 372. On Sunday, nearly 11,111 coronavirus cases were reported in the state.
