On Monday, April 25, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray was quoted in an account by the news agency ANI clarifying that while the state is not forcing citizens to wear face masks, they have not yet declared Maharashtra as mask free.

Therefore, he urged the citizens to continue wearing masks to protect themselves from COVID-19

This declaration comes in the midst of many states across India reinforcing the mask mandate to curb the spread of coronavirus in the country. On Monday, April 25, India reported nearly 2,500 fresh COVID-19 cases.

Considering the surge in numbers, the compulsion for face masks has been reintroduced in states including Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh.

In other developments, in the last 24 hours, Maharashtra reported 84 new COVID-19 cases, 71 recoveries and zero deaths. With this, the active cases stand at 929

On the other hand, last week, Maharashtra public health minister Rajesh Tope mentioned that the state government is assessing the current condition and would take necessary measures when needed.

Tope had further elaborated on how while wearing masks in Maharashtra is not compulsory, senior citizens and those who have comorbidities have been urged to continue wearing them as a precautionary measure in public areas.

The minister at the same time said that there isn’t any need to worry and that the situation is completely under control.
