Amid a lot of scepticism over the unlock in Maharashtra, state health minister Rajesh Tope on Thursday evening, May 27, confirmed that the ongoing COVID-19-induced lockdown will not be completely lifted from June 1.
While talking to reporters, Tope said the Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government has decided that all COVID-19 restrictions will not be lifted as 21 districts still have more than a 10 per cent positivity rate.
However, relaxations will be given in districts where there has been a decline in daily coronavirus cases, adding that the state government will release the guidelines soon.

The state government will take a decision regarding the lockdown extension and relaxations based on the task force report. Besides, the Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will take the final call, he mentioned after a meeting with CM Thackeray.

Besides, the Chief Minister's Office released a statement and said: "Although the COVID-19 growth rate is slowly declining in Maharashtra, the number of patients in 10 to 15 districts is increasing rapidly, and there is also a risk of mucormycosis (black fungus). The number of patients had reached a record high in September last year. Today's number of patients in the state has come down to the same level as in September. But we have to be more careful. There was a discussion in the Cabinet on extending the lockdown after June 1 and later gradually reducing the restrictions. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray directed the administration in this regard."

Thackeray had imposed a lockdown in Maharashtra on April 14 after an unprecedented hike in daily COVID-19 cases in the second wave of the pandemic. The lockdown was later extended on multiple occasions.
Meanwhile, the state minister Vijay Wadettiwar had recently hinted at lifting the restrictions in a "phased manner".
On the contrary, Aslam Shaikh warned that the unlock at this moment could be an invitation to a fresh wave.
