Ahead of monsoons, the civic body of Thane, Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has conducted a pre-monsoon survey which has revealed that over 4,522 buildings in Thane are in dangerous conditions.

According to reports, over 73 buildings are in the extremely dangerous category (C1) and need to be evacuated and 154 in C2A (can be structurally repaired), which also need to be evacuated. Moreover, the survey states 2,416 buildings are in C2B (can be repaired without evacuation) and 1,879 in the C3 (minor repairs needed) category.

In addition, according to an article by Hindustan Times, a civic official requesting anonymity said, “Most of the buildings here are stuck in a legal battle or in a dispute over redevelopment. Merely a few of these 43 are occupied at present. Overall Mumbra has the highest number of 1,419 dangerous buildings, followed by 1069 in Wagale Estate.”

Furthermore, civic commissioner Dr Vipin Sharma had asked officials to vacate all dangerous buildings in the city by May 31.

On the other hand, the TMC has announced that it will spend ₹50 crores to purchase 5 lakh coronavirus vaccines through the global tendering process. This comes as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently extended the deadline of the global tender for vaccines to May 25.

Mayor Naresh Mhaske said that the required amount will be taken from the ₹200 crores allocated for COVID-19 mitigation measures in the 2021-22 state budget.
