According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), Mumbai's air quality will be pushed into 'very poor range' a day after Diwali. The reason can be due to weather conditions and firecracker emissions that will lead to high smoke levels.

The air quality is expected to be improved from Saturday, November 6. On Thursday, November 4, the concentration of fine particles, PM 2.5, is likely to be 111 ug/m3 without firecracker emissions. However, the PM 2.5 is expected to reach 129 ug/m3 and further increase to 182 ug/m3 the next day with 50 per cent firecrackers emission.

SAFAR said that there was calm wind and cooler conditions in the past week, which trapped pollutants closer to the ground and increased the pollution levels in Mumbai.

As per the seven-days forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), it is likely that Mumbai will witness above normal minimum and maximum temperatures. Meanwhile, a day after Diwali, the PM2.5 concentration is expected to be 102 ug/m3 without firecracker emissions. While on Saturday, November 6, the concentration is expected to come down to 87 ug/m3.

For those unversed, SAFAR predicts the quality of air and is run by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology with the support of the Indian Meteorological Department.

Earlier it was reported that Mumbai's air quality is deteriorating as winters are approaching, and on November 1, air quality touched 188 (moderate).
