Indian Railways Extends Refund Collection Deadline to 9 Months

Officials said that passengers will not have to be concerned about losing their money on the tickets and that Indian Railways will refund the full ticket price of trains that were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Indian Railways has said that it will extend its refund collection deadline for cancelled tickets to nine months, offering a much-needed reprieve to those who saw their trains cancelled during the pandemic.

“As number of passengers are yet to collect refunds for their booked tickets, several zonal railways made suggestions and requests. Following which, an extension was given [on Tuesday] for three months for cancellation of tickets and collection refund," Indian Railways said in a press release.

Officials added that passengers will not have to be concerned about losing their money on the tickets and that Indian Railways will refund the full ticket price of trains that were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Passengers who booked their tickets at the station counter can collect their refunds from the same counter within 9 months of the original departure date.

Meanwhile, those who bought their tickets online will automatically see the refund reflect on the original mode of payment whenever Indian Railways cancels a particular train. 

The coronavirus pandemic has been hard on several sectors while also affecting railway routes across the country. Though Indian Railways is now beginning to resume services gradually, it’s not running at its peak. 

The same can be said about Mumbai’s suburban trains which were grounded for the most part, while essential workers and staff including healthcare workers and government employees were permitted to travel on the city’s local trains during the pandemic.
