Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged hospitals and corporates to donate vaccines for the coronavirus for the poorer section of the population.

According to reports, the city has administered at least one dose to 77 per cent of the adult population. Earlier on Monday, September 30, BMC Commissioner IS Chahal had asked private hospitals to find donors who can sponsor doses lying unused at these hospitals. Moreover, he added that this help the corporation cover the remaining 23 per cent population with at least one dose at the earliest.

In addition, the estimated adult population of the city is 93 lakh, of which 71.94 lakh have got at least one dose. Furthermore, the city received 9.8 lakh doses in July and 9.96 lakh in August.

Meanwhile, nearly 6 lakh doses have been committed to the BMC under CSR. Hospitals such as Jaslok and Surana Sethia have vaccinated with doses procured with corporate funds. Godrej and HN Reliance have bought and donated to the BMC and are helping them administer it.

On the other hand, the civic body had earlier explained that the coronavirus will be considered a pandemic until at least 80 per cent of Mumbai is fully vaccinated. The BMC’s caution is understandable given that the city has recorded nearly 300 cases each day of August so far. Health officials are also issuing warnings for a potential third wave of infections between September and October.
