According to reports, Maharashtra Congress has demanded a joint audit by the state and Centre. This comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed an audit into the installation and operation of ventilators provided to the states by the Centre.

The Congress in the state had earlier been raising the issue of the “sub-standard” quality of ventilators provided to Maharashtra from the PM Cares fund. Moreover, General Secretary and spokesperson Sachin Sawant stated that merely an audit would not be enough and demanded that the Center and the state government conduct a joint audit and take action against the “culprits”.

On the other hand, while addressing a press conference on Saturday, May 15, AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria said that as COVID-19 cases are increasing, it is crucial that protocols of infection control practices at hospitals should be followed. Moreover, due to the instances of fungal infection like the black fungus, Guleria further informed that this new disease is found in soil, air and now even in food.

Earlier on Tuesday, May 11, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope informed, “There could be over 2,000 mucormycosis patients in the state as of now and with more and more Covid-19 cases coming up, their number would increase for sure." Speaking about the same, Tope stated that the state government is trying to cover most of the treatment under the Mahatma Phule Jan Aarogya Yojana (the state's flagship health scheme).

Mucormycosis or black fungus is a rare disease that mostly affects individuals with a weakened immune system or those who have existing health conditions. A group of moulds/fungus cause this infection. The infection impacts the skin and can also affect the lungs as well as the brain.
