On Monday, April 11, the state announced that schools, as well as junior colleges, can go on summer vacations starting May 2 till June 12, reports stated. In light of this, the new academic year of 2022-23 will commence on June 13.

However, in Vidarbha, owing to the heat, the academic year will begin on June 27. Last month, the Maharashtra education department suggested that the summer holidays be declared from May 2 onwards. On the other hand, schools were taken aback owing to the May 24 circular by the state that asked these academic institutions to extend their academic year till mid-May.

On March 31, the primary and secondary directors of education sent the signed proposal to the principal secretary, however, final approval was awaited from the Mantralaya. The proposal looked to bring uniformity to the school’s academic year throughout Maharashtra.

The proposal had recommended that in the future the reopening of schools in the state should always be on the second Monday of June, while that in Vidarbha should be the fourth Monday of June.

It reportedly added that district-level education officers could reduce summer or Diwali vacations if there is a local demand to increase holidays for other festivals such as Christmas or Ganpati. In the midst of this, it suggested that the total holidays aren’t over 76 days.
