Schools and colleges across the state of Maharashtra remained closed for several months due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Classes were held online, in a digital format for some students, and after many months of the lockdown, the state allowed the schools to reopen for selected grades. Authorities state that along with offline education, the schools should focus on online and other methods as well to ensure students' safety.

Sharing more information for the benefit of students, Social Justice Minister Dhananjay Munde said that the students from Scheduled Castes should be eligible for post-matric scholarships, freeships, domestic scholarships, and similar schemes. Furthermore, one should take into account that the students are attending the classes online. Acting upon the same, Minister Munde has directed the Social Welfare Commissioner to consider the same.

As per reports, various schemes of the scholarships are implemented under the Department of Social Justice with an aim to provide financial assistance to students belonging to Scheduled Castes and Neo-Buddhists. This will be applicable for students from Maharashtra who wish to pursue higher education. 

Most of the colleges in the state are currently teaching students digitally due to COVID-19 pandemic. Students applying as new applications via the provisions of the Social Justice department can submit their forms and documents online at the college level and this would be considered for the year 2020-21. Students are encouraged to have an attendance of 75 per cent while submitting the applications.

Officials have said that the colleges and universities will not be able to give actual attendance for the year 2020-21, due to the coronavirus crisis. Furthermore, Minister Dhananjay Munde has also instructed the Commissioner of Social Welfare to approve the amount payable to eligible students in the scheme of scholarships, freeships, domestic scholarships, scholarships etc.
