The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) will be undertaking BMC's plan and set up Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations in order to promote the new EV policy of the Maharashtra government.

BEST will be setting up charging stations at 55 locations in Mumbai and suburbs for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, vans and buses.

On July 13, the government had introduced a EV new policy that was seeking to encourage the use of battery-operated vehicles. They wanted to encourage the use of such vehicles to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Maharashtra government has also provided exemption in road tax, registration charges and the property tax for transition to electric vehicles.

The chargers at these 55 stations will be operational 24x7, and each parking bay will have an area of 12 sq m.

An official said that they have invited bids for Request for Proposal for selection of an operator. They are also planning to add a software application that motorists can use for booking the charging lots.

To the successful bidder they will be allocating available space for the installation and operation of charging stations. This available space will be allocated to them for 10 years.

On Tuesday, November 2, the state Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray laid foundation stones for the EV charging stations at Hutatma Chowk, Kala Ghoda Chowk, and Rampart Row.
