The central government is likely to allow cinema halls and gyms to reopen under ‘Unlock 3.0’ while the restrictions will continue in containment zones. In Maharashtra, the Uddhav Thackeray government is formulation guidelines with an intention to provide more relaxations under ‘Mission Begin Again’.

Maharashtra Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope had earlier informed that the government was planning to allow gyms to operate in the state. Along with this, the state government is likely to allow shopping malls to operate as well as part of the unlocking of economic activities. 

The shopping malls and gyms have remained closed during the lockdown period in wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The Unlock 2.0 or lockdown 6.0 is scheduled to end on July 31 as the concerned departments chalk out guidelines for ‘Unlock 3.0’. 

Although the media reports suggest that central government may allow cinema halls and gyms to operate from August 1 but the educational institutions including colleges and schools and public transportation - metro and local train services - are likely to remain shut. 

Amid the speculations that cinema halls may be allowed to operate under ‘Unlock 3.0’, the stakeholders have started planning for the same. A manual has been issued to focus that the social distancing norms are practised.

According to the data provided by the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry, India’s COVID-19 cases have reached 14.35 lakhs while the death toll has risen to 32,771. The total number of coronavirus cases stood at 14,35,453 after the country reported a single-day spike of 49,931 positive cases on Monday.

Meanwhile, as of July 26, Maharashtra remains one the worst-hit states in India due to the coronavirus outbreak with 3,75,799 cases while the death toll has reached 13,656. In Mumbai alone, the number of coronavirus cases has reached 1,09,161 and the death toll crossed the 6,000-mark.
