The catchment areas of Thane and Nashik which provide water to Mumbai have received less rainfall this monsoon till now. Therefore, the city will face a 20 per cent reduction in the water supply from August 1.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal informed that the water cut is being carried out to prevent water shortage in the future.
Until now, the dams which supply water to Mumbai have less water as compared to the previous two years due to less rainfall. However, the monsoon season will remain for yet another month. The dams currently have 4.99 million litres of water which is 34 per cent of the reservoir’s full capacity.
Last year, the water was 12.40 million litres and the lakes were overflowing. Keeping this in mind, the BMC has decided to carry out 20 per cent cut in water supply for Mumbai.
Mumbai requires more rainfall in the month of August to quench its thirst. The water levels in the dams need to receive more rainfall this monsoon.
Earlier, the BMC was monitoring the situation since the seven lakes that supply water to the city of Mumbai had 50 per cent less water this year compared to 2019. Now, it has taken a decision to carry out a 20 per cent cut in the water supply.
