Mayor of Mumbai, Kishori Pednekar, and MP from North Mumbai, Gopal Shetty, on Thursday, May 20, 2021, inaugurated a drive-in vaccination center for senior citizens. The event was organised in the presence of local MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar at Grovel Shopping Mall in Kandivali East.
A meeting was held by MP Gopal Shetty and other officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) along with Vishwas Shankarwar on May 10, and demands were raised to start a Drive-in Vaccination Center for the benefit of the people.
This idea of drive-in vaccination centres at several malls across the city has proven to be very useful for seniors as well as physically disabled citizens. This system was started a few weeks back and has received both immense response and appreciation from Mumbaikars.

The first drive-in vaccination centre was opened in the beginning of May, in Dadar, and post the success, the civic body decided to open similar drive-in centres across all administrative zones in Mumbai. Following this, officials opened three more centres in the next few days, at Willingdon Sports Club in Tardeo, Parking space at National Sports Club of India (NSCI) in Worli and at the Andheri Sports complex.
Besides the above-mentioned names, MLA Siddhesh Kadam, Councilor Sunita Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Municipal Corporation and other officers were also present.
Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in the city of Mumbai have reduced significantly, and officials from the BMC and the state government have mentioned that the outcome has been possible because of the lockdown-like restrictions imposed across the city and other districts. Currently, the government has imposed strict restrictions until June 1, 2021.

On the other hand, Maharashtra has vaccinated more than 2-crore citizens so far, and this is the highest number of vaccinations conducted by any state in India. Over the last few days, i.e. from May 15-17, 2021, vaccination at government-run hospitals was suspended due to the cyclone warning from IMD. But officials resumed the same on May 18, 2021. Due to the shortage of vaccines in the city, officials have only been administering the same to selected citizens in Mumbai, and keeping the requirements in mind, BMC has raised a global tender to procure vaccines, post which, officials expect to resume vaccinations for citizens between 18 and 44 years of age.
