While addressing the nation, on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Centre has decided to repeal the three farms laws. He also urged farmers to call off their protests and return home.

PM also stated that the Central government has ensured that crores are spent on farmers’ infrastructure and farmers are benefitting from the platforms set up. "However, despite our best efforts, some farmers were not convinced about the laws. We were also prepared to modify the sections that they had objections about. I apologise to the countrymen that we were unable to take a section of farmers into confidence," he added.

PM Modi said that the Constitutional process to repeal farm laws will begin soon. Moreover, the Prime Minister also called to make a fresh beginning, new initiatives to be rolled out.

He also mentioned that agriculture reforms and the welfare of farmers became his top priority after becoming PM in 2014.

Despite withdrawing, PM Modi defended the Act and said that the three farm laws were brought to empower and strengthen small farmers, adding that it was a demand by farmers, economists and agri experts.

Soon after the announcement, former Punjab CM took to Twitter and thanked PM for taking this decision. "Thankful to PM Modi for acceding to the demands of every Punjabi and repealing the 3 black laws on the pious occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti."

The opposition and farmers accused the government of railroading the three laws without much discussion in parliament.
