Maharashtra Energy Minister Nitin Raut on Wednesday said that sabotage or foul play by external forces regarding the massive power cut in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) can’t be ruled out.
On Monday, Mumbai and its surrounding areas witnessed unusual power cut due to which the local train services on central and western railways were brought to halt. Along with it, other important works across the city were also affected.
Raut had said that the reason behind the power cut in the MMR region will be investigated and strict action will be taken against those involved in the lapse. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray also stepped in to take stock of the situation and held a meeting with the energy department officials.
The power cuts happened due to the technical glitch in circuit 2 of Kalwa-Padghe power station and the repair and maintenance work was underway at Circuit 1, Raut had informed earlier.
A committee is being formed to conduct a technical audit to find out those responsible for the foul play, the minister informed while adding that the interim report will be out within a week and action will be taken immediately.
Earlier, Thackeray directed the suburban railway to coordinate with the railway administration for providing relief to the affected passengers. He also directed Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) chief Iqbal Singh Chahal to provide uninterrupted power supply to hospitals amid the power outage.
