After a hike in fuel rates on Sunday, May 16, for the first time, petrol price touched INR 99 a litre at the pumps in Thane and Navi Mumbai — just a rupee short of INR 100-mark. While the diesel rate escalated to INR 90.52.
The petrol price on Sunday was increased by 24 paise per litre and diesel by 27 paise, pushing rates across the country to record highs and that of petrol in Mumbai to near INR 99 a litre.
This is the ninth increase in prices since May 4 when the state-owned oil firms ended an 18-hiatus in rate revision they observed during assembly elections in states like West Bengal.
A litre of petrol in Mumbai now comes for INR 98.88 and diesel is priced at INR 90.40 per litre.
Besides, rates had already crossed INR 100-mark in several cities in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra and with the latest increase, the price in Mumbai too was inching towards that level.
For the first time ever, eight districts in Maharashtra have petrol prices breaching INR 100, said an official from an oil marketing company. However, as for diesel, 11 districts now have crossed the INR 90 alarming level.
The highest price in the state was at Parbhani where petrol was retailing for INR 101.25 per litre. Whereas, the highest rate of diesel is in Amravati at INR 91.86.
