People living in and around the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) should brace themselves as Mumbai and Thane are expected to receive “heavy to very heavy” rainfall at a few places on Wednesday, September 8.

Moreover, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a red alert which indicates extremely heavy rainfall at isolated pockets in the Palghar district. In addition, the meteorological body has predicted heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms across Maharashtra over the next four days. This comes a day before the start of the Ganpati festival.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Sindhudurg and Dhule are on Orange alert as well. Continual downpour is expected across the entire Konkan belt up until September 11 due to the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal which has now moved to over south Chattisgarh.

Furthermore, the IMD has stated that the low-pressure area and its remnants are “very likely to move North West over the next 4-5 days”. A yellow alert has also been issued for Mumbai on Thursday due to which officials have instructed fishermen not to venture out to sea.

This is expected to be a major rainfall event after July when many districts in Konkan and western Maharashtra were flooded. Since last week, rainfall activity had considerably improved.
