Over two weeks after the Maharashtra cabinet undertook the decision, the state government has issued a notification that nine seats in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have been increased, stated reports.

With this, the aggregate number has risen from 227 to 236 seats. Based on accounts, the State Election Commission (SEC) will now ask the civic authority to redraw the ward boundaries and submit its drafts.

On Tuesday, November 30, Maharashtra’s urban development department made a notification rising the number of seats by nine after the proposal was sanctioned by Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari.

On November 10, the state cabinet had undertaken the decision and sent the file to the Governor for his approval on November 16. On Monday, November 29, it was approved and an official mentioned that a notification was made the next day.

According to reports, SEC officials claimed that they attained the notification on Thursday. With officials from the SEC remarking that they will write to the BMC to redraw the boundaries of the ward according to the new notification and submit the draft to it. Later the draft will be seen by them and a further course of action will be decided.

This will be followed by putting the ward boundaries in the public domain, sanctioned by the SEC for recommendations and objections. An official was quoted saying by narratives that the public will receive nearly 15 days.

After which the SEC will put in place a senior officer to look into the suggestions that will take seven days. A report will then be submitted leading to the approval of the final ward formation. The BMC elections are slated to be held in early 2022.
