The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will table ₹15 crore tender for maintaining and upkeeping the penguin pen at Byculla zoo. The proposal will be tabled in the upcoming BMC's standing committee meeting on Wednesday, November 23.

In 2018, the civic body had appointed a private agency for the maintenance of penguins for three years. The tender expired on September 30, 2021. Before the expiration, the BMC appointed a new agency for a fresh tender. However, the opposition party slammed the civic body for spending a huge amount on upkeeping of penguins.

In the new tender, they have covered all the necessary expenses of the penguins. The officials also informed that if a new penguin is born, then they don't have to pay extra as the cost will be covered in the tender amount.

The BMC has extended the earlier contract and shortlisted the existing agency (M/S Highway) for the fresh contract. A senior official said that they went through the tender thrice before shortlisting them.

On the other hand, Congress said that it would question the civic body in the meeting, asking them why are they depending on private contractors when it already has experienced support staff.
