Amid a rise in the cases of new coronavirus variant, Omicron, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a fresh set of guidelines to ensure proper monitoring of travellers coming to the city from ‘countries of concern’.

Accordingly, passengers coming to Mumbai from Omicron-hit countries will have to be home quarantined for seven days even after though they have tested negative in the RT-PCR test.

However, in order to curb the spread of the infection, the civic body chief Iqbal Singh Chahal said that it has introduced a very unique and strict home quarantine monitoring mechanism for international passengers arriving in Mumbai from risk countries. It will be as effective as institutional quarantine.

Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) will share a list of international travellers arriving at Mumbai to BMC at 10 am from ‘at risk’ and ‘high risk’ countries, and those who have visited such countries in the last 15 days. The list, however, will only include names of passengers who reside in Mumbai.

Following which its staff will contact the passengers to inform them to remain home quarantined for the next seven days. BMC will also write to the housing societies to ensure that quarantine norms are being followed by such passengers.

The passengers will be shifted to government-run institutions if they are found violating it.

The war room staff will call passengers under home quarantine five times a day and ask them about symptoms. In addition, the staff will also make physical visits to such homes to ensure that the protocols are being followed.

BMC further stated that if housing societies found that a person was not following the protocols, they can inform the ward war rooms. Moreover, no visitors will be allowed into such households.

On the seventh day of home quarantine, the staff from the war room asks the traveller to undergo a RT-PCR test. In case the passenger shows any symptoms or tests positive, he/she should be immediately shifted to BMC’s facilities for treatment.

In the last one month, 3,760 migrants from Omicron infected countries have come to Mumbai. Of which, 13 of them have been infected with coronavirus so far. The samples of such patients have been sent for genome sequencing.

Meanwhile, eight people have been detected with Omicron across Maharashtra.
