According to reports, Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region has received 11 per cent less rainfall below normal this year which has worried the farmers.

The Indian Express has further reported that nearly a month after sowing was completed in mid-July, farmers believe the quantity and quality of Kharif crops will be hit badly if the deficit continues till the end of this month.

Maharashtra has received 7 per cent more rainfall between the months of June and August 22. However, the rainfall occurred mostly in the areas of Marathwada and Central Maharashtra. Moreover, drought-prone Marathwada, comprising eight districts, has received 533.4 mm rain so far compared to the usual 446 mm, a 20 per cent increase.

Meanwhile, Central Maharashtra received 595.6 mm against the normal 547 mm, an increase of 9 per cent. However, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Vidarbha region, which comprises eleven districts, received only 631 mm rain compared to the normal index of 705.1 mm.

The IMD had earlier forecasted rainfall of 2,205 mm for the monsoon season that began on the 1st of June. However, the total rainfall recorded as of 8:30 AM on Monday, August 16 stood at 2,218 mm. This means the total rainfall has surpassed IMD’s expectations with around six weeks still left in the season.

Monsoon this year has ranged from heavy spells of rainfall coupled with days of no rain. By contrast, the usual monsoon pattern involves rainfall scattered evenly throughout the season.
