With the Maharashtra government stating the addition of nine additional electoral seats in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), last week, according to reports, the municipal corporation is anticipated to submit its new ward boundaries draft to the State Election Commission (SEC), by the weekend.

Additional municipal commissioner, Suresh Kakani remarked that they are working on the ward boundaries draft and their proposal will soon be ready, cited accounts. In spite of the delay in the notification by the state, officials from the SEC have claimed that the BMC elections will be held in February.

On November 10, the Maharashtra cabinet undertook the decision to surge the electoral seats from 227 to 236. An ordinance for the same was sent on November 16 to the governor for his approval. With the ordinance now being approved, a notification in its regards was sent last week.

Based on accounts, the BMC proposed to increase five seats in western suburbs, three in eastern suburbs with one in the island city. After the BMC submits the list to the SEC, the election commission will ask the public for its recommendations. Post this, the ward boundaries will be finalized.

Back in 2002 was the last time when the electoral wards were increased. During that period, the number rose to 227 from 221. By means of the 2011 census, a 3.87 per cent rise in population has been reported in the BMC’s jurisdiction, highlighted narratives.

When the 2011 census had come out, the BMC had redrawn the electoral ward boundaries taking into cognizance the increase in suburban population and fall in island city population.
