The statewide restrictions put in place by the Maharashtra Government to curb the spread of coronavirus could likely be extended until the end of May, a new report says.

As per officials quoted by TOI, districts like Mumbai and Pune are showing a decline in reported cases, but they appear to be plateauing with no real decrease in the numbers.

“Nearly 12 districts are showing a decline in cases, but that is just one-third of the state; the remaining two-thirds is (sic) either stable or is reporting an increase. Opening up would lead to a surge again,” a state cabinet minister said under anonymity.

Another official said that relaxations would be provided only when the cases are fully under control. State Health Minister Rajesh Tope said last week that the state’s positivity rate for COVID-19 wasn’t down by much despite carrying out an aggressive testing regimen.

The matter is expected to be further discussed at the cabinet meeting scheduled for May 12. A final call on extending lockdown restrictions is likely to be announced shortly after.
