In a major development, at least 26 Maoists were killed on Saturday, November 12, in an encounter with police in eastern Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district, over 900 km from Mumbai.

Among these, top Maoist leader Milind Teltumbde, who is also an accused in the Bhima Koregaon violence case, was gunned down in a massive encounter. Moreover, his bodyguards - a man and a woman - are also believed to have been shot dead.

Teltumbde, 58, was in charge of the Maoist outfit’s Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh (MMC) zone, police said. He was the younger brother of former IIT professor, Dalit intellectual and writer, Anand Teltumbde, who has been jailed in connection with the Elgar Parishad case.

According to a PTI report, Teltumbde, who had a bounty of INR 50 lakhs on his head, was believed to have been active in four states - Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana.

Sixteen teams of the anti-Maoist C-60 commandoes - with over 500 personnel - carried out the huge security operation that started at 6 am on Saturday and went on till 4 pm. Four security personnel were injured in the operation.
