Over the last few days, the state has been fighting a new infection that has been reported in many coronavirus (COVID-19) patients. As per the data released by the state government, Mumbai and the nearby areas have reported several cases of Mucormycosis or Black Fungus, and the unavailability of proper treatment has claimed several lives too.

Keeping this in mind, Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner, Abhijeet Bangar, said that the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has set up a system to identify patients infected with the fungus, and this has further helped the team with detection, examination and treatment, thereby preventing the spread further.

To strengthen the same, NMMC has also decided to offer free examination, tests and treatment facilities for the infection. The information was shared by Abhijeet Bangar with the citizens through video clips posted on social media, whereby he appealed to the people to not get scared, but to stay alert about the infection. He also assured that the corporation is taking measures and will support the ones in need.

On the same day, the commissioner also held a detailed discussion with the Navi Mumbai City Task Force and the doctors from several hospitals who are currently treating the patients with Mucormycosis. Officials have implemented the action plan immediately and are working towards offering assistance to the patients in need.

As of now, Out Patient (OPD) Facilities have been set up at three NMMC hospitals at Vashi, Nerul and Airoli, where the screening for Mucormycosis is being conducted. Diagnostic tests are also being arranged whenever needed. In addition, a treatment facility for patients is being provided at the government hospital in Vashi.

Moreover, the government has decided that the OPD facilities across the above mentioned three municipal hospitals, along with the tests and treatment at Vashi hospital will be offered free of cost, confirmed Abhijeet Bangar.

Reports also state that the patients have expressed concerns regarding the availability of medicines as well as the cost. Keeping this in mind, NMMC has taken note of the grievances and is working towards making sure the medicines are made available to the patients across Navi Mumbai, on a priority basis, and at no cost to those who cannot afford it.

Meanwhile, amid the rising cases of mucormycosis, chemists across the state are experiencing difficulties in sourcing Amphotericin B. It is said that the injection has been in high demand for COVID-19 associated fungal infection mucormycosis. Government officials and bodies have planned to take necessary action to ensure the supply of medicine is available. Maharashtra health dept along with district collectors will monitor the supply of the injection. Further, global tenders have been released regarding the same.
