A post-mortem on the rape victim in Mumbai’s Sakinaka has brought to light that a significant injury had resulted due to the insertion of a pointed object into the victim’s private parts that had reached her abdomen, highlighted reports. In light of this gruesome incident, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes pressurized the state to add charges into the rape-murder case.
On Saturday, September 11, the 32-year-old woman succumbed, nearly 36 hours after being sexually assaulted in a parked tempo. Later, on the same day, the victim’s post-mortem was conducted at the state-run JJ Hospital in Byculla. Based on certain accounts can expert added that the death was caused due to “complications following injuries”.
It is allegedly claimed by some that the driver was familiar to her. In addition to this, a team from the National Commission of Women asked that the victim’s underage children be promptly transferred into the state’s care.
A day later, on Sunday, September 12, the police added provisions in the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act to the issue.
Moreover, on Sunday, a marathon meeting was conducted wherein, members from each of the 93 police stations in Mumbai, were instructed to check isolated areas within their jurisdiction. They were also instructed by their seniors to see to it that even one complaint of a crime against women doesn’t go unreported.
According to a report by the Times of India, Arun Halder, vice-chairman, National Commission for Scheduled Castes elaborated that provision will allow the victim’s family to attain prompt compensation worth INR 4.25 lakhs. He added that they met with the family with the police and individuals from the state social welfare department. He believes that the family can receive an equal amount of compensation when the police, in court, file a charge sheet. Based on the Act, the state needs to ensure educational expenses for the victim’s children, offer a government job to at least one of the children when they can legally work in addition to giving them a home.
The report further elucidated that the autopsy was video recorded and for histopathological analysis, her viscera has been preserved. The report also alleges that a hospital source stated that there were other minor injuries on the victim’s body.
In addition to this, a team from the National Commission for Women interacted with the director-general of police and urged that night patrolling be ramped along with a scheme being initiated to move vulnerable women residing on the streets to safety.
