Cases of dengue fever have witnessed an over six-fold surge in Mumbai, this year in contrast to the last. Based on statistics, dengue cases have nearly reached the pre-pandemic numbers. The number of fatalities recorded is in the single digits, highlighted accounts.

Based on the data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), cases of dengue, last year were at 129. This year, between January and November they stand at 821. On the other hand, chikungunya that is also a mosquito-transmitted disease has risen to 60 in 2021.

In 2020, Mumbai recorded 5,007 cases of Malaria which back in 2019 stood at 4,357. In 2021, Malaria has affected 4,813 individuals. Additionally, it is believed that yearly, Mumbai registers 7,000-8,000 cases of gastroenteritis. In 2020 the number of cases for it fell to 2,549.

This can be attributed to the fact that a significant number of roadside eateries and unhygienic sources of water were not availed by citizens. In 2021, 2,564 cases have been logged which is stated to be an almost 70 per cent fall when compared to the pre-pandemic figures.

Moreover, 258 cases of Hepatitis have been reported in 2021. This figure stood at 263 in 2020. Cases of last year were significantly lower owing to less testing and low mobility of people, believe experts.
