Amid a rising trend in the coronavirus cases this month, the state COVID-19 task force on Tuesday, April 26, conveyed to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray that masks should be made compulsory at confined places such as cinema halls, drama theatres and malls.
This comes on the day when Mumbai recorded over 100 cases for the first time after the third wave of COVID-19 ebbed. The last time it had witnessed cases in three figure number was on March 2.
It also mentioned that while vaccination drive should be expedited, the focus must be on genome sequencing.

Expressing concern over the low number of tests being conducted, the task force members have said that currently, an infected person is carrying out a rapid antigen test and avoiding RT-PCR tests. There is a need to be more careful, as some mutations of the virus may occur. Not all viruses are as mild as Omicron, so masks and vaccinations are the most effective solution, said a member of the task force.
On the other hand, on April 25, CM Uddhav Thackeray clarified that while the state is not forcing citizens to wear face masks, they have not yet declared Maharashtra as mask free.
As per data revealed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the city reported 102 cases with a daily positivity rate of 1.4 per cent. Whereas, in a welcoming news, the city has been recording zero deaths linked to coronavirus since the past few months.

Meanwhile, it has come to light that the task force’s recommendations assume significance ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s virtual meeting with all chief ministers on Wednesday, April 27 to review the COVID-19 situation.
At 12 noon tomorrow, 27th April, will be interacting with state Chief Ministers to review the COVID-19 situation.

Moreover, a study by IIT-Kanpur has unveiled that fourth wave is expected in June 2022.
According to reports, on Monday, Mumbai reported 45 cases. On April 20 and 21, it had recorded close to 100 cases — 98 and 91 — respectively.
