On Monday, November 8, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)  issued revised guidelines for Chhath Puja stating that they will set up artificial ponds for puja across Mumbai.

The civic administration has said they will make artificial ponds across Mumbai, and the concerned regional offices will be responsible for making these ponds. They will also be responsible for filling them once the festivities are done.

Last week, the guidelines issued by the BMC stated that people should avoid beaches. It also mentioned that social organizations at all wards in Mumbai are encouraged to make artificial ponds.

Now, the BMC in their circular stated that they will be bearing all the costs of construction and filling up of the artificial ponds. The decision was taken after Congress and BJP had demanded that the artificial ponds should be set up at the civic body's expense, just like they do for the Ganapati festival.

They have also banned gatherings at seafronts in the city for Chhath Puja. This development came as the threat of the third wave of COVID-19 still persists. Offices are directed to make sure that there is no overcrowding in these artificial structures and all COVID-19 protocols are followed.

This year Chhath Puja will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 10.
