The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced that it will resume the COVID-19 vaccination drive on Friday, July 23, at civic and government-run centres after the arrival of a fresh stock of vaccines.

The BMC suspended the vaccination drive at BMC and Maharashtra government-run centres on Wednesday and Thursday due to a shortage of doses. Meanwhile, it operated only 58 of the 309 vaccination centres on Tuesday, July 20.

The civic body in a statement said that a new stock of vaccines is expected to arrive on Wednesday night, July 21. BMC stated that it would receive a total of 61,200 doses. Of which 50,000 doses will be Covishield and 11,200 shots of Covaxin.

Despite this, Maharashtra is currently at the forefront of COVID vaccination in India. As per reports, Maharashtra, on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, set a new record in COVID vaccinations by crossing the four crore mark.

Earlier, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope stated that Maharashtra needs at least three crore vaccine doses for the coronavirus per month in order to vaccinate the entire eligible population against COVID-19.

Speaking about the same, Tope added that the capacity of the state is to vaccinate 15 lakh, people, daily, but as of now only two to three lakh people are being inoculated in a day because of the "shortage of vaccine doses".
