As cyclone Tauktae made its way to have a landfall in Gujarat, Mumbai and the coastal belt of Maharashtra reeled under the impact. On Monday, May 17, at least 14 people lost their lives and 18 others were injured as an aftermath of the cyclone.
Of these, four persons died and two were injured in Raigad district, a sailor was killed in Sindhudurg district while two others were injured. Meanwhile, in Jalgaon, two died of tree fall. Whereas, three died and one injured in Thane, while Palghar reported two deaths. Moreover, two people died in Ratnagiri after coming in contact with the electric wire and eight others were injured.
As per official reports, around 3772 constructions have been partially and 11 completely collapsed. Seven animals also died - four in Ratnagai, two in Raigad, and one in Palghar. Nearly, 15,000 people were evacuated to safer areas.
The cyclone hit Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and several parts of western Maharashtra, including Kerala and Karnataka on Sunday, May 16. On the way to Gujarat, the cyclone struck Mumbai, Thane and Palghar along with Konkan on Monday, May 17.
Mumbai also witnessed heavy rain, forcing the authorities to suspend airport and rail services, and shut Bandra-Worli sea link. Moreover, several areas in Mumbai saw waterlogging. The cyclone also caused over 400 trees to be uprooted.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray took cognizance of the damage and instructed that the relief works be quickened. The CM also took stock of the damage to fishing boats.
Thackeray also assured that precautions were taken to ensure the power supply to COVID hospitals has not been disrupted. Alternate electricity supply arrangements are also in place. He also directed officials to restore vehicular movement after removing trees and electric poles that have fallen due to gusty winds.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and took stock of the damage that the cyclone has caused to the state.
