Mumbai has been having bountiful rainfall in the month of August. Even in the first week of the month, there were days when the city received heavy rainfall and even on 12th and 13th August parts of the city received moderate to heavy rainfall.

Indian Meteroligal Department has predicted that on Friday, August 14 too Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Nasik may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. Some places in Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts can also witness heavy rainfall.

K S Hosalikar, Dy Director General of Meteorology, India Met Department, Mumbai. Government of India.  shared that there are dense clouds over the Konkan region which may bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to this region including Mumbai over the next 3-4 days,

IMD in its bulletin shared that there is low-pressure formation over northwest Bay of Bengal, off north Odisha and West Bengal. This low pressure is likely to persist and become more organised over the next two to three days paving the way for fairly widespread rainfall for the Konkan coast, ghat areas and central Maharashtra.  This would result in heavy rainfall in Mumbai and Pune.

June and July are considered to be monsoon months and during these months the state of Maharastra receives most of its rainfall. However, this year, even in the month of August, there have been spells of intense rainfall. There was one at the beginning of the month that lasted for about 2-3 days. It is expected that there will be another spell this week. There is already an orange alert issued by IMD for Mumbai and a red one for Pune.

In 24 hours that ended at 8.30 am on Thursday, the suburbs in Mumbai had recorded rainfall of 42 mm of rain while South Mumbai recorded 17.7mm of rain. In addition to this, the catchment area of Mumbai also received heavy rainfall. Thanks to all the rainfall that the area has received since the beginning of August, the area now has gathered 60.17 per cent of the total capacity of rain.

Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also connected with Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to check regarding the current situation of rain and flooding in Mumbai and surrounding areas. Last week parts of the city had received heavy rainfall that had resulted in flash floods. The Prime Minister after being apprised of the situation had assured the state of all possible support.
