In a substantial development, at least three private hospitals have cancelled their orders for Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine due to little demand.

Moreover, the intense cold storage required for the COVID-19 vaccine has also prompted cancellations from private hospitals. This comes while the government is providing free coronavirus vaccines across the country.

According to reports, besides Bharati Vidyapeeth Medical College and Hospital, Avis Hospital in Hyderabad has also reportedly scrapped its orders for 10,000 Sputnik V doses. Another Pune-based hospital, speaking on the condition of anonymity, stated that it has also cancelled its orders.

The Sputnik V vaccine is based on a proven and well-studied platform of human adenoviral vectors, which cause the common cold and have been around for thousands of years.

On the other hand, according to the latest study in the UK, the citizens who have received both the jabs of their coronavirus vaccine are three times less likely to contract COVID-19 again. Earlier on Wednesday, August 4, the Real-time Assessment of Community Transmission (REACT-1) study, one of Britain's largest studies into coronavirus infections in the country, said that infections in England have increased four-fold from 0.15 per cent to 0.63 per cent since the last REACT-1 report, which covered the period from May 20 to June 7.
